Summary

Between October and December 2021, there were a total of v.0 million visits to the DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries.

This was more than four times the number of visits when compared to the aforementioned menses in 2020 (1.2 one thousand thousand), but was 55.iii% lower than the same period in 2019 (11.1 meg).

This excludes visitor figures from the Museum of the Home (which was airtight from January 2018 to June 2021) and the National Portrait Gallery (which closed in March 2020 and will reopen in spring 2023).

This release provides monthly absolute visitor totals for the private museums and galleries sponsored past DCMS.

Background

This release provides information about visits to DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries in England. Following the change from monthly to quarterly publication, monthly visitor figures will still be available but published on a quarterly basis.

The statistical serial provides information on the visits to DCMS-sponsored museums and galleries in England and is subject to seasonal fluctuations. The full general tendency is for visits to be higher during schoolhouse holidays. Some temporary exhibitions concenter large numbers of visits and in that location may likewise be occasions when all or part of a museum or gallery is airtight for refurbishment, both affecting the visitor numbers.

Information collection methods vary between institutions, and each uses a method appropriate to its state of affairs. All data is collected according to the Functioning Indicator guidance.

Figures may exist subject to revision. Any amendments will be published on this website in accordance with the Department's revision statement, available in our compliance argument.

This release is published in accordance with the Code of Practice for Statistics (2018) produced by the Britain Statistics Authority (UKSA). The UKSA has the overall objective of promoting and safeguarding the production and publication of official statistics that serve the public good. It monitors and reports on all official statistics, and promotes skillful practice in this area.

Pre-release admission

The Pre-release Access List contains a list of ministers and officials who accept received privileged early on admission to this release of Museum and Gallery monthly visit figures. In line with best do, the listing has been kept to a minimum and those given access for briefing purposes had a maximum of 24 hours.
